Ruperez with a Little Help from his Friends

The 35th Edition of the Vuelta a Espana featured racing from April 22 to May 11, 1980. Foreign riders Sean Kelly, Michel Pollentier, Claude Criquelion and Roberto Visentini, along with Spanish riders Miguel Mari Lasa, Faustino Ruperez, Juan Fernandez, and Enrique Martinez Heredia were expected to contest for a wide-open victory.

SPECIAL NOTE: This edition marked the almost total absence of televised coverage. “Spanish cycling” was going to a period of perceived decline. Significantly, on the final day of racing Spanish TV preferred to cover a billiards championship!?!?

Race Summary:

Prologue: Roberto Visentini won the Prologue Time Trial and earned the first Amarillo Jersey of the 1980 Vuelta.

Stage 1 & 2: Irishman Sean Kelly sprinted to the wins on the first two flat stages.

Stage 5: Zor-Vereco's Faustino Ruperez was the solo winner in the first mountainous fifth stage to Seo de Urgel. The race leader’s Amarillo Jersey transferred to Ruperez.

Stage 16b: The 22.8 km Individual Time Trial was raced around Leon. The ITT was not a strong point for race leader Ruperez, but he managed a great effort to finish in seventh place +1’41” behind stage winner Visentini. Main rival Torres gained +37” on Ruperez but fell short of taking the race lead.

Stage 18: The penultimate eighteenth stage, 197 km from Valladolid to Los Angeles de San Rafael, Pedro Torres, second in the GC, launched an attack on the climb to Puerto de la Morcuera. The race leader could not answer the attack and began to lose time. Together with teammates Miguel Mari Lasa, Juan Fernandez, and Angel Arroyo the race leader bridged up to Torres halfway up the Alto de Cotos. Ruperez saved his leader's jersey with help from his team.

Stage 19: One stage later Faustino Ruperez rode into Madrid to claim the prestigious Vuelta a Espana victory.
